Starting Over

Starting over gets harder and harder as you get older. When we were young we dreamt of things we wanted to do based on what we liked. As we get older, we make our decisions based on more complex factors such as the time commitment and financial rewards. At some points in our lives, we also get use to the routine and become resistant to change.

After two degrees and several careers later, I am back at point A. Trying to figure out what I really want to do with my life and how I can live it meaningfully. I've been searching for jobs and imagining what I might feel when I am actually working in that position but it had only put my life in a standstill. The best way to discover your calling and decide if something is right for you is actually trying it out and not idealizing it.

Even though I have no clue what I wanted to do, I knew that I needed to start somewhere. So after a year of contemplation, I finally took the first step to move forward. The hardest part is always taking the first step. I've always known that I loved food and enjoy baking but I wasn't sure to what capacity I was willing to work in the industry.

Today I went for my first interview for a Bakery. It is a pretty well known specialty bakery in the city. On my way, thoughts flooded through my head and I was so nervous I almost didn't get out of my apartment on time. During the interview, I was glad that my nervous energy turn into excitement and I was able to interact a bit with the interviewer. I guess it went pretty well since she invited me back to observe the day as a baker next week and hopefully, if that goes well then I got the job. When I left the interview, the thoughts flooded my mind again and I realized that I had several important questions that I didn't ask such as dress code and rate of pay. But I have to say, I did a great job today. I took the first step into exploring something new and getting myself back on my feet again.
